CUZ Short Language Programme for International Exchange Students (Elementary)

The Programme is specially arranged by CUZ for International Exchange Students to learn Chinese as a second foreign language. Designed as a short-term, intensive, practical and accelerated course, the entire programme focuses on the teaching of most-frequently used and urgently-needed parts of the language to meet the actual needs of students in Chinese speaking situations wherever they are. Target students are those who have completed our Elementary Programme.

Who is this Programme for?

This Programme is for the non-Chinese speaking undergraduate students  who will come to CUZ as exchange students in the learning of the Chinese language at an intermediate level.

The learner at this level, prior to entry, has basically mastered the pronunciation skills of Chinese Putonghua; their vocabulary for recognition is between 2000 and 4000 Chinese characters and vocabulary for production between 1000 and 2000 Chinese characters; and their skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are essentially good enough to survive in daily Chinese communication situations.

Duration

This is a one-year course with a total 720 hours (20 hrs a week) of thirty-six weeks.

Teaching objectives

Through one-year study in the programme, students can expect to master a good amount of about 5000 Chinese words and phrases, and generally have Chinese speaking, listening, reading and writing abilities. At this level, students are basically ready to enter Chinese colleges to have further study of the language.

The teaching content and requirements

The content of the teaching prescribed in the Programme is predominantly based on Chinese Communicative Objectives List while consulting The Grammar Section in A Grade Syllabus for HSK and Chinese Vocabulary and Glossary Proficiency Level Syllabus.

Through various lessons and methods of practicing language skills, students are expected to have mastered the usage of some 3000 words and phrases required for the intermediate level and their corresponding Chinese characters, about 80 grammar points/items. Their abilities and skills in Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating can basically help them with the needs of daily life and a limited range of work. They have initial understanding of Chinese culture and language. By the end of the course students are expected to achieve the following performances in the five skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating:

Listening:

 Students can, in standard Chinese Putonghua accent or Putonghua with light local accents, at a normal

 speaking speed (180~220 wpm), understand topics of ordinary conversations on daily life and social activities,

 general talks for negotiations or business, class lectures of basic college courses and broadcast news on familiar

 topics;

 Speaking

 Students can talk at length using correct intonation, at normal speed, and their Chinese is clear, accurate and

 appropriate. They can engage in discussions of non-specialist current topics, and can have simple negotiations

 and business talks in the language;

 Reading:

 Students, at this level, should have the ability to read practical writings within a limited range of work, general

 scientific writings, articles and print news. Their reading speed is expected to be 120~150 wpm. They can grasp

 the main points of Chinese writings with limited flexibility. They have the ability to search for information in

 Chinese charaters, and to absorb new words;

 Writing:

 Students on this level should be able to take notes in Chinese (300 characters and above) on the main points of

 longer discourses, at a writing speed of no lower than 10 wpm. They can produce general articles, documents

 and practical writings within a limited range of work in basically correct and coherent forms. Their writings can be

 easily understandable and are accurate;

 Translating:

 Students can successfully interpret between Chinese and their mother tongue over familiar topics, and can do

 translation from general articles in familiar topics and common practical writings in simple language.
