Communication University of Zhejiang: An Overview

Communication University of Zhejiang (CUZ) is a prestigious, media-focused institution jointly overseen by the Zhejiang Provincial Government and the National Radio and Television Administration. Established in 1978, CUZ operates two campuses—one in Hangzhou’s Qiantang District and the other in Wuzhen, Tongxiang City—spanning approximately 90 hectares (1,355.14 mu). The university consists of 18 academic schools and teaching units, with an enrollment of over 13,300 undergraduate students, 1,000 graduate students, and 400 international students. CUZ employs more than 1,400 faculty and staff members, including over 150 distinguished scholars and professionals recognized at the national, provincial, and industry levels.



Academic Excellence

CUZ offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary education across six major fields: Arts, Literature, Engineering, Management, Education, and Economics. The university is particularly renowned for its academic strength in Theater, Film, and Television Studies, as well as Journalism and Communication—both recognized as Provincial First-Class Disciplines (Category A). Additionally, Information and Communication Engineering and Public Administration are designated as Provincial First-Class Disciplines (Category B).

The university offers two academic master’s degree programs in Journalism and Communication, and Art, along with 12 professional master’s programs covering fields such as Theater and Film, International Chinese Language Education, Translation, Publishing, Electronic Information, Library and Information Science, Music, Dance, Opera and Chinese Opera, Fine Arts and Calligraphy, and Design. CUZ currently provides 36 undergraduate programs, including 13 National First-Class Undergraduate Programs—such as Broadcasting and Television Studies—and 10 Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Programs, including Internet and New Media.



Innovative Teaching and Research Facilities

CUZ is home to several cutting-edge educational platforms, including three at the national level:

● National Animation Teaching and Research Base

● National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for TV Editing and Directing

● National Promotion Base for Chinese Language and Characters

Additionally, CUZ operates 11 provincial-level teaching platforms, four provincial teaching teams, and two provincial modern industry-supported colleges. The university has developed 12 National First-Class Courses and 178 Provincial First-Class Courses. It has also secured two National-Level New Liberal Arts and New Engineering Education Reform Projects, 41 Provincial Teaching Reform Projects, and has received five Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.

Its research infrastructure includes:

CUZ hosts 14 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, including China Research Center for Radio and Television Arts and Zhejiang Institute for Social Governance and Communication Innovation. In the past five years, CUZ has secured more than 100 national research and creative projects, including 11 major or key national initiatives. Over 100 policy advisory reports authored by CUZ scholars have been recognized by provincial and ministerial leaders.

CUZ is designated as a Zhejiang Province Demonstration Base for Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation and hosts one of the most dynamic Media and Cultural Innovation Parks in the region. The university consistently ranks among the top institutions in Zhejiang for graduate entrepreneurship rates within the first year after graduation.
