Te Herenga Waka —Victoria University of Wellington, originally known as Victoria College, was founded in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. It is a global–civic university that values close involvement with the social, cultural, and economic life of its city and region. Consistent with the civic university tradition, the University engages closely with New Zealand’s capital city. Its staff and students enjoy privileged access to the nation’s archived heritage, its cultural taonga, and they benefit from our strong and unique links with government departments and agencies, business, iwi, the judiciary, research organisations, cultural and environmental organisations, and the diplomatic community. In the twenty-first century, however, the University of Wellington now views civic engagement in a contemporary, global context. As well as engaging with the Wellington region they also contribute to New Zealand, to the Asia–Pacific region and to the world, vigorously carry out and strengthen international cooperation in the field of education and academics. Victoria University of Wellington has been taken as a large public comprehensive university, one of the oldest universities, and one of the eight five-star universities in New Zealand.

This recently signed agreement by the two schools plans to jointly apply for the establishment of a four-year undergraduate course in the major of communication (cross-cultural communication direction), so as to further deepen the cooperation in teaching, scientific research and academics between the two universities.
